Othello: The Remix was commissioned for the Globe to Globe Festival by Shakespeare’s Globe, Chicago Shakespeare Theater (Barbara Gaines, Artistic Director, Criss Henderson, Executive Director) and Richard Jordan Productions, Ltd. The production was developed with the Q Brothers by Rick Boynton, Chicago Shakespeare Creative Producer. Othello: The Remix had its World Premiere in 2012 at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and its U.S. Premiere in 2013 in the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Theatre Upstairs at Chicago Shakespeare. The production has toured the world ever since, performing in ScotlandGermany, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates, captivating audiences around the world, and garnering acclaim and awards, including Edinburgh’s Musical Theatre Matters Awards for Best New Musical Theatre Show and a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Ensemble.

During its U.S. premiere at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, the production played to sold-out audiences from March-August, 2013 and returned there this past spring for a limited run playing, April 12-May 8, 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.

Othello: The Remix is The Q Brothers’ third hip-hop translation of Shakespeare, following Funk It Up About Nothin’ and The Bomb-itty of Errors. And this production brings The Q Brothers back to New York, having last performed Off-Broadway in their hit production of The Bomb-itty of Errors, which also received critical acclaim such as:

“The language fizzes with new life, it’s irreverent and yet in tune with Shakespeare’s original; it’s clever and witty and fast”

The New York Times

“The cast spins comic gold. This energetic twist is a thrill, due primarily to the jaw-dropping performances of the cast. Inspired silliness – they’re da bomb!”

Entertainment Weekly

“A witty and irresistible hit! It’s intelligently written and hysterically performed by five young men. Bomb-itty is rap at its best, theatre at its most compelling.”

 – Julie Taymor, VOGUE

Othello: The Remix is produced by Mary Lu Roffe, Susan Gallin, and Rodger Hess.
