James Eckhouse Joins Cast of ‘All The Way’

Producers Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Louise Gund are pleased to announce that James Eckhouse, most recently seen in the world premiere of Jane Anderson’s The Escort at The Geffen Playhouse and best known for playing Jim Walsh on the original “Beverly Hills 90210”, will play the role of Robert McNamara in the Broadway bound production of ALL THE WAY by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan (The Kentucky Cycle).

Eckhouse joins previously announced three-time Emmy Award-winning actor Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) as Lyndon B. Johnson, Michael McKean as J. Edgar Hoover, Brandon J. Dirden as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rob Campbell as Governor George Wallace, 5-time Tony nominee John McMartin (Into the Woods, High Society, Sweet Charity, Show Boat, Don Juan) as Richard Russell, Roslyn Ruff as Fannie Lou Hamer and Coretta Scott King and Robert Petkoff as Senator Hubert Humphrey. Additional casting will be announced.

Robert McNamara was the longest serving Secretary of Defense from 1961-1968, serving under both Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He played a large role in the Unites States involvement in the Vietnam War.

All the Way will play The Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street) for a strictly limited run and begins rehearsals on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, with previews beginning Monday, February 10, 2014 and an opening night set for Thursday, March 6, 2014. The play is directed by Bill Rauch, Artistic Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where All the Way began its theatrical life.

All the Way, with its cast of twenty actors, takes audiences behind the doors of the Oval Office and inside the first year of Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency and his fight to pass a landmark civil rights bill.

All the Way was commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle and premiered at OSF in 2012. It then went on to play a sold-out and critically acclaimed run at the A.R.T. from September 13-October 12, 2013 starring Cranston. The play was awarded the 2013 inaugural Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, established through Columbia University in honor of the late Senator Kennedy, honoring new plays or musicals exploring US history and issues of the day.

James Eckhouse. James has starred in over 50 plays ranging from Shakespeare to Shepard on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in most of the nation’s regional theaters. His most recent appearances include the world premiere of Jane Anderson’s The Escort at The Geffen Playhouse, Six Degrees of Separation at the Old Globe and the Mark Taper Forum’s production of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize winning play: The Goat. On TV James has had recurring roles on The Good Wife, Masters of Sex, The West Wing, has guest starred on dozens of series, and is best known for his portrayal of one of television’s favorite TV ‘dads’ – Jim Walsh on the original Beverly Hills 90210. Among James’ many film credits are The Avengers, S.W.A.T., One True Thing, Junior, Defending Your Life, 84 Charing Cross Road, Fat Man and Little Boy, Cocktail, Big, Leaving Normal, Joseph – King of Dreams and two 2013 releases Shotgun Wedding and The Good Mother. His extensive directing credits include the world premieres of Keliher Walsh’s Year of The Rabbit at Ensemble Studio Theatre LA , Bright Boy, The Passion of Robert MacNamara at The Electric Lodge, and In Heat at the Lost Studio. James served for three years as co-artistic director of Ensemble Studio Theater-LA developing and directing over 20 new plays. On Television, James has directed several episodes of hit series including 90210 and ABC’s award winning drama, Once And Again. His documentary, Protecting The Possibilities won a Cine Golden Eagle and his short film, True Bromance is due in festivals this winter. James began his training at Chicago’s Second City and went on to receive a BFA in Drama at the Juilliard School.

Bryan Cranston won three consecutive Emmy® Awards for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” for his portrayal of Walter White on AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” Cranston holds the honor of being the first actor in a cable series, and the second lead actor in the history of the Emmy® Awards to receive three consecutive wins. His performance has also earned him a fourth Emmy® nomination this year, a Television Critics Association award, three Golden Globe nominations and a Screen Actors Guild award. Cranston will make his Broadway debut this January playing President Lyndon B. Johnson in All the Way, by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Robert Schenkkan. The play depicts the early period of LBJ’s presidency and his relationship with key political figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., J. Edgar Hoover and Senator Richard Russell. Cranston received rave reviews for his performance, which just finished a sold out run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. On the big screen, Cranston won a second Screen Actors Guild award this year for his co-starring role in the 2012 Oscar-winning Best Picture, Argo, essaying the role of CIA operative Jack O’Donnell opposite star-director Ben Affleck. He will next star in Legendary Pictures remake of Godzilla opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, which will be released by Warner Bros. on May 16, 2014. He will also voice a character in DreamWorks Kung Fu Panda 3. He will then begin production on Jay Roach’s Trumbo, playing the title role of Dalton Trumbo, who was one of Hollywood’s most successful screenwriters whose career came to an end when he was blacklisted in the 1940’s for being a communist. Last year, he was heard as the voice of “Vitality” in Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted, which grossed over $730 million worldwide. He also starred in Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall, Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages and Nicolas Winding Refn’s critically acclaimed film, Drive, opposite Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. Cranston’s additional feature film credits include: Contagion, John Carter of Mars, Larry Crowne, The Lincoln Lawyer, Little Miss Sunshine, Seeing Other People, Saving Private Ryan and That Thing You Do! Born to a show business family and raised in Southern California, Cranston made his acting debut at the age of eight in a United Way commercial. It wasn’t until he finished college that acting became a serious consideration. While on a cross-country motorcycle trip with his brother, he discovered community theater and began exploring every aspect of the stage. Soon, he was cast in a summer stock company. The comedic short series followed Cranston as the character Jack Powers and his race to win a seat on the State Senate. Cranston also produced an instructional DVD called KidSmartz, which is designed to educate families on how to stay safe from child abduction and Internet predators. Robert Schenkkan is the author of twelve plays, two musicals and a collection of short plays, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Kentucky Cycle, which was performed to great acclaim at the Intiman Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum, The Kennedy Center, and on Broadway. It also won the LA Drama Critics Award, and was nominated for the Tony, the Drama Desk, and the Outer Critics’ Circle Awards. His other plays include Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates, By the Rivers of Babylon, Handler, Heaven on Earth, Final Passage, and 1992, and the film The Quiet American. For television he wrote the Emmy nominated HBO miniseries The Pacific, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg; the miniseries The Promised Land, The Andromeda Strain, Crazy Horse, and Spartacus. He also wrote two plays for children, The Devil and Daniel Webster and The Dream Thief.

Bill Rauch is the Artistic Director of Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where he has directed three world premieres: Mr. Schenkkan’s All the Way and By the Waters of Babylon, and Bill Cain’s Equivocation; as well as sixteen other classical and new plays. Among his initiatives at OSF, Mr. Rauch committed to commissioning up to 37 new plays to dramatize moments of change in American history. American Revolutions: the U.S. History Cycle is now entering its fifth year of productions. Mr. Rauch is also cofounder of Cornerstone Theater Company, where he directed more than 40 productions in rural and urban communities nationwide and served as artistic director from 1986 to 2006. He has directed a number of world premieres, including The Clean House at Yale Repertory Theatre; Living Out and For Here or To Go? at the Mark Taper Forum; and My Wandering Boy and The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler at South Coast Repertory. He also directed the New York premiere of The Clean House at Lincoln Center Theater. Work elsewhere includes productions at South Coast Repertory, Guthrie Theater, Arena Stage, Long Wharf Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, Great Lakes Theater Festival and En Garde Arts. His production of The Pirates of Penzance (OSF, 2011) will open at Portland Opera this spring. Mr. Rauch is the recipient of numerous awards, and is a graduate of Harvard College.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Established in 1935, the Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival is among the oldest and largest professional regional theatres in the country. Located in Ashland, Oregon, OSF is a cultural and recreational destination for more than 120,000 visitors per year, has a company that numbers more than 550 (including over 100 actors) and an attendance of more than 400,000, with an annual budget of $33 million. As many as nine plays are performed concurrently on three stages over the Festival’s nine-month season. The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of theater. Winner of the 2012 and 2013 Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival for its productions of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Pippin, the A.R.T. is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond.
